Needing to be poked and prodded

Posted on Sun Jul 31st, 2016 @ 10:19am by Lieutenant JG Sean "Shack" Byrnes

Mission: Homecoming (Reborn)
Location: sickbay
Timeline: 2015 hours

Sean Byrnes, sucking in a breath, walked into sickbay. He knew that with a transfer he would need a physical by the local med personnel. Entering, he saw them as busy as a starship should be, and called out. "Is there a medical officer who can check out an engineer in a hurry?" He let it go, waiting for a response.

"In a hurry for what, exactly?" Candy said, poking her head out of the medicine room. "Are you bleeding?" she asked, giving the Lieutenant a quick once over from the doorway and not seeing any visible wounds.

"I bleed form the heart, sweety," said Shack, chuckling. He then looked to this brazen female. "Look, I'm an engineer, I need access to engineering, and without a transfer physical, there is only so much I can do. You wanna help me, or not?"

"Then by all means, Mister Master Engineer....have a seat," Candy said, pointing to the nearest biobed. "Bernie? Want to give me a hand?" she asked and the shift charge nurse came out of the medicine room where they had been checking the inventory.

"Is she gonna clap," asked Shack. "Ya know, 'give you a hand'?" He laughed at his own joke.

"Oh. We have a comedian in our midst," Candy said, with a chuckle. "Aren't we lucky," she added, more as a statement than a question. "Have a seat," she said, patting the biobed. "I'm Dr. Quinn. And you are?"

"Sean Byrnes, Doc," he said, sitting down where she had directed. "Friends call me Shack."

"So how long have you been on board?" Candy asked as she activated the biobed's monitors and they lit up on the wall behind the bed.

Bernie came into the cubicle with a hemo-extractor and walked to the opposite side of the bed from the doctor and prepared to draw the required amount of blood from Shack's arm.

Byrnes, seeing the device, pulled his sleeve up before answering the Doctor's question. "Oh, I been aboard a few hours now. Had to go see engineering first, you know how it is." He gave a sheepish grin.

Candy, quickly, reviewed Sean's medical records...which were pretty normal for an engineer. Several burns, lacerations...a couple of broken bones (primarily in the hands). "No known allergies?" she asked, not seeing any listed.

"I'm allergic to stupid people," replied Byrnes, grinning. "So far, since I've been aboard, no sneezing. I take that as a good sign." He chuckled, then got a little more serious. "No, Doc, no allergies that I am aware of."

Candy raised an eyebrow at the engineer's attempt at humor. "Are you always the class clown?" she asked as she scanned him with her bio-scanner.

Shack glanced around, then leaned toward her a bit, keeping his voice low. "A personality quirk, Doc. Don't take offense."

Candy looked at the scan results, then put the instrument on the utility tray. "It will take a lot more than a few 2 cent jokes to offend me," she laughed.

Bernie came back from the lab and handed the blood work results to Candy.

"Clean as a whistle," Candy said to Byrnes. She whispered something to Bernie who left the cubicle. When she came back she was carrying a tube which she handed to Candy. "Here," Candy said, holding the tube of Dermagel out to Sean. "Raked knuckles are a common injury for you mechanic types. This will provide a temporary fake skin...until they heal up. It also will keep dirt out."

"Hmm, I guess you gals do like soft hands," quipped Shack. " And, for the record, my jokes are worth at least a nickel, Doc." He took the gel tube and slid it into a pocket on his tool vest. He hopped up off the bed, giving her a big smile and raising his eyebrows like he wanted to say something.

Candy leaned closer. "I wouldn't go that high, Shack," she said, quietly. "More like 3 and a half." She stepped back with a laugh and smacked Byrnes on his butt. "Go on. Get out of here," she teased as she signed his release.

"What? No hug?" He giggled. "Thought you would at least hand out Jolly Ranchers or something." He winked and smiled, heading for the door. As he made it into the corridor he had another personal chuckle, liking sickbay far more than he had in the past.
