Pulling Double Duty = Exhaustion

Mission: Homecoming (Reborn)
Location: Sickbay
Timeline: 1626 - 2215

ON:

After having been on duty since 1700 the previous day (as she was covering for the CMO who was down on the planet)...Candy, on a hover gurney at the very back of Sickbay, lay on her side facing the wall. She had just drifted into a pleasant REM sleep when she heard someone calling her name. The voice seemed far away...muffled...easily ignorable until she felt her shoulder being shook.

"Doc...Dr. Quinn....wake up," the voice said.

"Huh?" Candy moaned as the voice became clearer and less dreamlike. "What?" she said, realizing someone was trying to wake her up. Her mind cleared and she opened her eyes. "I'm up. I'm up," she said, unconvincingly, as she struggled to sit up without falling off of the narrow gurney.

"We need you in treatment 3," the nurse standing next to the gurney said.

"Yeah. OK. I'm coming," Candy muttered as she stretched and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes. Slipping off of the gurney, she removed the elastic band from her ponytail, ran her fingers through her hair and tied it back up as she headed for the treatment cubicle, hoping that it would be something simple and quick so she could get back to the gurney. But that wasn't in the cards.

The next four hours was back to back patients. A sprained wrist...a fractured rub...a broken nose...a lacerated bicep...a pediatric stomach ache...an allergic reaction...a toddler with his daddy's pip up his nose. Finally Candy emerged from a cubicle and looked around at an empty Sickbay. With a sigh she spent the next hour and a half recording physician's notes and signing charts. Once the last chart was signed and handed to the medical secretary for filing, Candy yawned and made her way back to the gurney.

No sooner had she fluffed her pillow and got comfortable one of the night nurses called out, "Dr. Quinn...we need you in 2."

"Yeah. Alright," Candy groaned and slid back off of the gurney. Looking back at the gurney she smiled wearily and said, "save my place. I'll be back," then headed for the cubicle.
